New Building, Library City of Heidenheim

New Building, Library City of Heidenheim

It is planned to build a new municipal library in the city centre of Heidenheim. This new cultural institution is intended to be used as a meeting point and a place to linger, communicate and inform oneself, rather than just a place to borrow media.
Client:City of Heidenheim
Location:Heidenheim
Period:Project completed
Area:approx. 2,000 m2
Competition
Due to its central location in close proximity to the town hall and the Church St. Paul, the library will be closely linked to these two important facilities of the city and communicate with them through its independence.

The two pedestrian axes, the east-west axis and the north-south connection from the main train station to the Church St. Paul, will be connected to each other through the library. Two new public spaces will be created in the immediate vicinity of the library, activating the urban space and strengthening the connection between the two pedestrian axes.

The northern and southern sides of the library will be transformed into public places for visitors to enter the building. The interior of the building consists of a single continuous space, with different levels, each with its own identity. Visitors are free to choose where they want to stay and work. The central open space reflects this process and distributes people vertically into the building.
