Schilleroper, feasibility study

Schilleroper, feasibility study

The Schilleroper, which was erected in 1889 between Schanze and St. Pauli, was initially constructed as a circus, but was later transformed into a theatre in 1904. Following the war, the Schilleroper was utilized as a hotel for migrant workers and emergency housing; however, since 2006, there has been no activity inside.

Feasibility Study
For the past two years, the residents' initiative "Schilleroper" has been attempting to engage in discussions with the government, monument protection agency, and current owners to consider future usage concepts. Consequently, the architectural firm "Dirk Anders" has created an urban planning proposal comprising three distinct building components.

To the north, a four-story residential structure with social housing and living projects for senior citizens could be built, whereas in the south, a building could accommodate small-scale businesses, public uses and alternative housing formats. These buildings should be designed to conform with the eaves height of the existing steel structure, which, according to the residents' vision, could be used as a freestanding and green outdoor space that remains the centre of the area. In the core of the structure, a three-story edifice could be established to house numerous community services.
